Cheryl Snead Lecture
"From Minority to Trail Blazer -- Defining Moments of a Career"

Cheryl was the first African-American woman to graduate with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMass. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Business from Purdue University. In 1991, Ms. Snead established Banneker Industries as a machine shop specializing in the precision machining of defense oriented components. Today Banneker Industries offers strategic sourcing solutions for both large and small-scale operations, providing the manufacturing and distribution expertise to get products to market efficiently. Ms. Snead also serves many roles in the community, including mentor to woman-owned businesses, motivational speaker and business executive. Banneker Industries and Snead have received numerous awards for business accomplishments and ongoing civic work.

The Diversity Programs Office (DPO) at the College of Engineering provides academic and non-academic support to increase enrollment, retention, and graduation among under-represented minorities and women. We have a tutoring program that also provides academic support.

Our goal is to assist students in achieving their academic goals by offering services and programs that include seminars, academic assistance, and access to undergraduate research and scholarship opportunities.

Our office is located in 128 Marston Hall - a warm and friendly place where students can get resources and/or discuss personal and academic concerns. Please come in and meet new engineering students, just like you.
